The Early May Bank Holiday was moved to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day this year to Friday 8th May 2020.
VE Day – or Victory in Europe Day – is marked on May 8 and commemorates the Allies accepting the surrender of Nazi Germany in the Second World War.
The Royal British Legion is encouraging people to decorate their houses in red, white & blue & enjoy a picnic or stay at home ‘street parties’ and Bridgewater Home Care would love to see house windows or front doors decorated for this celebration.
While we can’t have the street parties many had planned to mark VE Day, there are still lots of ways to celebrate that won’t break social distancing rules.
The English Heritage website has templates for bunting you can print out and stick in your windows or posters. You can find them here
There is also a toolkit to download here
Menu options and recipes on the same site include some 1945 favourites from cheese and marmite swirls to carrot scones as well as:
Cauliflower cheese with bacon – make the most of the rationed cheese with this British classic
Homity Pie – a rich, wholemeal pie with a potato, onion and cheese filling said to be made by Land Girls during the Second World War
We hope to see lots of houses, flats and bungalows decorated – don’t forget to share your pictures with us and remember to stay safe as per the Government’s guidelines.
