Intergenerational Interaction – The Benefits

Bridgewater Home Care | Intergenerational Interaction

The concept of intergenerational care may seem like a new phenomenon, but it actually began in Japan back in 1976. Yet, even before this, it was (and in many cultures still is) commonplace for multiple generations of one family to live under one roof and share caring responsibilities between family members.

Today, we have become accustomed to generations being much more segregated with family members often living miles – sometimes oceans – apart from each other. This can mean whole generations of children are growing up with minimal contact with grandparents and an increase in the number of older people living alone.

Yet, the benefits of having these two generations interact, who on the surface may appear to have little in common, are many.

Benefits for the Older Generation

Self-esteem

Having the undivided attention of a young curious child, full of questions, excitement and wonder is uplifting for many of our clients. It alleviates their loneliness and increases their own sense of self-esteem that they have valuable things that they can teach, and interesting stories to share.

Pure Enjoyment

At Bridgewater Day Care, we pride ourselves on bringing joy into the lives of our clients and making them smile every day. There is nothing more guaranteed to do this than a gregarious little three-year-old giving you a heartfelt hug.

Physical Improvements

Have you ever tried to keep up with a four-year-old? Well, many of our clients certainly gave it a try when our visitors from Little Angels attempted to teach us all the dance moves to the ‘Baby Shark’ song. Definitely more fun than the average exercise session!

Benefits for the Younger Generation

A Patient Listening Ear

Our older generation are one of the best groups to spend time with young children. They have years of wisdom to pass on and are at a point in their lives where they have the availability and patience to do so, providing exactly the kind of stimulation that young children thrive on. As a result of this, children who regularly interact with older people see improvements to their language development, and literacy and social skills.

Empathy

Spending time with older adults gives young children an insight into the aging process and can help to dispel many of the myths and prejudices they many hold towards the older generation. Whereas the proportion of the population over 65 is growing exponentially every year, it is the younger generation who will determine what our future society looks like.
