Changes to shielding advice in England

July 7, 2020

The government has made some changes to its guidance for people who are shielding because the transmission of COVID-19 in the community in most areas has gone down.

The Leicester area has different restrictions at the moment.

The changes from 6 July are set out on their website here: Government guidance

From 1 August, the government will pause shielding unless the transmission of COVID-19 in the community starts to rise significantly. The government says that from this date you should adopt strict social distancing measures, rather than full shielding measures.

Relaxed lockdown guidance for people who are clinically vulnerable, including people with Parkinson’s and MS say that it’s very important to stay at home as much as possible.

The MS Society UK have published useful information on what’s changing, your rights, and where to find support: MS, Coronavirus and Shielding

Parkinson’s UK have also published updated guidance on their website: www.parkinsons.org.uk/news/understanding-coronavirus-and-parkinsons

Carers UK have also produced this very helpful guide to download or print out : www.carersuk.org/files/section/6423/covid-19-shielding-updated-guidance.pdf . For information and support, contact the Carers UK Helpline on 0808 808 7777, open Monday to Friday (9am-6pm) or email:advice@carersuk.org.

For many, the gradual easing of lockdown will signal a return to normality and a cause for celebration. For those living with dementia and their families, however, a return to normality will have a quite different meaning. The Dementia UK, Admiral Nurse Dementia Helpline : 0800 888 6678 , has seen an increasing number of families becoming overwhelmed and uncertain around changes in lockdown rules and guidance – especially with people with dementia only being classified as ‘moderate risk’ .

During this pandemic, it is especially important to take extra care of your wellbeing and mental health. The charity Mind have put together some helpful guidance on wellbeing and coronavirus: www.mind.org.uk/information-support/coronavirus/coronavirus-and-your-wellbeing/
