Running from the 3rd to 9th of February 2020, National Apprenticeship week aims to demonstrate the many benefits that an apprenticeship can bring by raising awareness and encouraging employers to recruit apprentices in their workforce.
We asked our Managing Director, Phil Eckersley for his views on this important subject:
Why did you choose to use apprenticeships in your organisation?
To assist the business to achieve its growth goals and quality targets but to also have a pipeline of new talent coming through the organisation.
How does having apprentices contribute to your organisational goals?
Although it takes time to nurture and train an apprentice, they can contribute to the
business by supporting managers in good governance and ensuring policies and procedures,
along with regulatory requirements, are satisfied.
What impact have the apprenticeships had on your staff?
They can bring in new ideas and new energy to the business. They also help to take off
some of the load from other team members.
What has worked well for you?
We have had some good care apprentices who have shown promise. We have also had
apprentices who assist the business and then move on but have made a contribution that
can then be mirrored by a new apprentice by having proper processes in place.
Have there been any challenges?
It can be challenging to get the right apprentice for the job and with the right attitude to
work and responsibility. If an apprentice is energetic and keen to make an impact they will
generally do well.
What advice would you give to other employers who may be thinking about
It is important that a proper recruitment process is carried out to ensure the right
apprentice joins your business, and for the right reasons.
